Startup Problems

When a startup command is issued, the following errors showed up----

ORA-10997 Another startup/shutdown operation in progress
ORA-09967 Unable to create or open lock file
Linux Error:5 Input/Ouput Error

Initially tired with O/S locks enabling nfslock
/etc/init.d/nfslock start
chkconfig --levels 35 nfslock on

Which didnot resolve the problem

The problem is with Database lock file in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs which gets created once a database is started, but didnot get killed/deleted because of a sudden shutdown of Database.
The locks exist in the said location as lkinstSID and lkSID.On deleting these files the database started and everything went fine.
