R12 Installation


Briefly the installation and configuration steps for Oracle Applications R12 are as follows:
1)Install linux on the server with appropriate mount points(partitions)
2)Perform the configuration steps required for Applications installation
3)Create a stage area for installation
4)Complete the installation steps
5)Perform the post-installation steps
6)Startup and shutdown steps


a. Insert the bootable Linux DVD in the DVD-drive and reboot the server
b. The server has to take the first boot device as cd/dvd for the installation to start.Edit the BIOS settings appropriately for this to happen.
c.Once the system boots from DVD,press Enter key
d. Skip the media test
e. Click Next on the subsequent three screens.(Choose server when prompted)
f. On the next screen,choose manually partition option and click Next
g. Give the mount points for filesystem as(Depending on your HardDiskDrive Capacity):
/ (system) 20-30GB ext3
/oraAPP (Application Tier) 120-180GB ext3
/oraDB (Database Tier) 140-200GB ext3
/stage (R12 dump) 45-60GB ext3
swap (temp) Double the RAM- swap
h. Click Next to accept the mount points
i. Click Next to accept the boot loader
j. Enter a hostname,ip address,netmask,gateway information on the next screen and click Next (or directly click next -the details can be entered even after installation)
k. Choose No firewall and SELinux as disabled on the next screen and click Proceed
l. Click Next to accept the languages(choose additional if needed)
m. Choose the timezone and click Next
n. Enter a password for root user and click Next
o. Choose Everything option and click Next to accept the packages to be installed
p. The installation starts after formatting the partitions.Take out the DVD from the drive and Click Reboot.
q. On first startup answer the questions and click Next and Finish.
r. Congrats,That finishes the installations steps for LINUX.


a. Login as root user open the terminal and type 'netconfig' to specify ipaddress and other network information.
b. Download the patch 4198954 and unzip the patch
c. Go to the unzipped folder and install the 2 packages.
# rpm -ivh package_name
d. Edit the hosts file in /etc folder using vi editor.....enter the following line,save and quit hostname
(your ip) (relevant address) (your host)
e. Type 'service network restart' ...OK has to be returned on all lines.
f. Edit /etc/sysctl.conf to edit the kernel parameters required for Applications
vi /etc/sysctl.conf

kernel.shmmni = 4096

g. Link and move the following files.....Type the following commands at # prompt
mv /usr/bin/gcc /usr/bin/gcc323
mv /usr/bin/g++ /usr/bin/g++323
ln -s /usr/bin/gcc323 /usr/bin/gcc
ln -s /usr/bin/g++323 /usr/bin/g++
h. Edit /etc/security/limits.conf and add the following lines
* soft nofile 4096
* hard nofile 65536
* soft nproc 2047
* hard nproc 16384
i. Edit /etc/resolv.conf and the following lines
options attempts:5
options timeout:15
j. Edit /etc/profile and add the following lines ,save and quit
export TEMP=/tmp
k. Add users and groups by typing following commands at # prompt
#groupadd dba
#groupadd oinstall
#useradd -d /oraAPP -s /bin/bash -g dba applmgr
#useradd -d /oraDB -s /bin/bash -g dba oracle
l. Set passwords for the users created. Type
# passwd
and give the password when prompted.
m. Change ownership of directories to the user who will install the Application.
#chown -R applmgr:dba /oraAPP /oraDB /stage
Reboot the System
n. Type 'xhost +' at root prompt to enable Gui display for other users also.

a. Insert the first DVD labelled Start Here -Disk1 DVD
b. Run the following command
c. Give the target directory name as /stage.
d. Press Enter key to accept default y to Automount
e. Enter the mount point as /media/cdrecorder
f. Press Enter to stage Oracle Applications
g. Insert the DVDs as and when prompted.

a. Login as applmgr and change directory to /stage/StageR12/StartCD/Disk1/rapidwiz
b. Run Rapidwiz ...Type './rapidwiz' and press Enter
c. A screen appears which takes you through the installation steps .....Click Next on first 3 screens.
d. Enter the CSI number, Metalink account and country and click Next
e. Choose create new configuration and Click Next
f. Choose a port pool and Click Next
g. Choose Database type Vision/fresh, Specify a SID,verify host and domain.....
Give the username as applmgr and group as dba and specify the directory as /oraDB and Click Next
h. Select Suite Licensing and Click Next
i. Click Next on the Next 2 screens to accept license products and country specific functionalities.
j. Choose Database character set as UTF8 and click Next
k. Verify the host,domain and specify the base directory as /oraAPP and instance directory as /oraAPP/inst and Click Next
l. Click Next ...The rapidwiz verifies and validates the system configuration and notifies if there are any errors...All the checks have to return a GREEN

tick mark if passed. Correct the errors if there are any RED cross marks and restart the rapidwiz.
m. Click Next and then Yes on the next screen to start the installation .
n. Once the installation is finished it performs post installation checks and notifies if there are any errors. It should return all GREEN marks if successfully installed
o. Click on Finish and that Ends the Installation Steps

a. Change the ownership of /oraDB to oracle user
As root user type #chown -R oracle:dba /oraDB
b. Set the environment by entering the following line in .bash_profile as applmgr user at home directory
vi .bash_profile
. /oraAPP/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSPROD_dev.env
('PROD' is Database SID and 'dev' is the hostname specified during installation)
Save and Quit
c. Run the command '. .bash_profile' at applmgr's $ prompt
d. Switch user to oracle and set the environment by entering the following line in . bash_profile at home directory
. /oraDB/db/tech_st/10.2.0/PROD_dev.env
Save and Quit
e. Run the command '. . bash_profile' at oracle's $ prompt.
f. Congrats,Here Ends the Installation steps for Oracle Applications R12 on Linux .
Now Users can access the Application by specifying the address in the browser as
(http Port specified while installation).
